Sewer Tunnel Replacement Project

Charleston Water System is in the midst of one of the largest and most complex capital improvement projects in our history: replacing the deep sewer tunnel system in Peninsula Charleston and West Ashley.

The tunnel was built more than 30 years ago to carry untreated wastewater to the Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Plant, and at the time of construction, was one of the first deep tunnel systems built for the purpose of wastewater collection. The available technology and materials--together with limited knowledge about conditions inside a wastewater tunnel--resulted in a system highly susceptible to the corrosive nature of wastewater.

Replacing the sewer tunnel system is a necessary project that requires an enormous commitment of time and resources and demands collaboration among many groups. Charleston Water System has brought together an experienced team of engineers to design the new wastewater tunnel system that will serve the needs of Charleston for the next 100 years.
