Charleston Water System operates an extensive recycling program. Besides the 50,000 pounds of paper recycled in 2002, more than 28 million pounds of aquatic debris collected from the Goose Creek Reservoir was recycled and turned into mulch. In addition, one million pounds of concrete debris from the demolition of the old St. Andrews wastewater treatment plants were used to create an artificial reef off the coast of Kiawah Island.
Charleston Water System’s Vehicle Shop, which services our fleet of more than 100 vehicles, reuses antifreeze and in 2002, recycled more than 15,000 pounds of used oil, along with 39,000 pounds of tires. Charleston Water System also feeds excavated dirt through our “Dirt Monster” machine, which screens out debris and yields dirt suitable for use as fill in construction projects.
